30 Days of...
What can you learn in a month?
I’ve been doing my best to keep up with a really beautiful group of talented musicians and producers participating in Kiefer’s 30 Days of Harmony
It got me thinking:
What else can you learn in 30 days? Not achieve mastery, but substantially move the needle on?
I often have this idea that things need to take forever and they need to happen at some indefinite point in the future.
But what if significant progress could happen in a month, and you could get started right now?
What if you did 30 Days of:
Rhythm
Melody
Bass
Genre your interested in
Instrument you want to learn or improve on
Sound selection
Synthesis and sound design
Arrangement
Song structure
Track analysis
FX processing
Mixing
Mastering
In a year you would have significantly leveled up and/or seen where you need to focus more intentionally.
Being an independent music producer requires a lot of different skills (definitely more than those listed above, but those provide a solid foundation). Improving them all at once definitely can happen to some extent by completing tracks over and over again.
But I wonder if there’s something to be said for the occasional deep dive.
What do you think?
This week
I’m taking my own advice and putting my burgeoning harmonic knowledge to use today, rather than at some indefinite point in the future…
The idea of this exercise was to take two keys some distance apart from each other on the circle of fifths and make a smooth modulation between them by adding in chords from a key in between the two most-distant keys into the middle of the progression.
May you all have a most harmonious week. (Or 30 days, even) <3
